I forgot to mention when using the Nikon Z 180-600mm on the Nikon Z50II you get a full frame equivalent focal length of 270-900mm. It certainly helps get you closer to the action for birds and wildlife. All up, not a bad first day out with the Nikon Z50II. Lots more videos coming as I find out more best settings and other pros and cons I can share. Thanks for watching 🙏
Nice review, cheers Adrian! I will probably grab this body to compliment my Wife’s D500. I already own the 180-600, as well as a 1.4TC. How would 1,260mm work for you out in the woods :)
@@adrianalfordphotography Ha, yes, a pity the Supermoon has come and gone. If you have the 1.4TC, try it, it doesn’t impact image quality much at all on the Z-lenses. I tested it on both the 180-600 and 100-400, and very happy with the results. And that’s on the z8/z9 bodies, where any sharpness loss will be very visible. I might pop in to DownTown Melbourne later this week, Ted’s Cameras have the body on the BF special. $1,500. I hear you on the dx lens, but I already own so many Z-mount FF glass, might rather put that money towards a 400 4.5, let’s see. Look forward to a follow-up review from you!
I have been waiting also. I take it that it is worth the upgrade. From z50 to z50II I would like to trade up if possible. Nikon needs to get people moving towards mirrorless.
This is by far the best review of Z50ii, I always believed no tool is bad, you only need a good master (lol)...and you are spot on with the AF demo, beautiful pics. Amazing. I can now take that leap of faith..! I wish Nikon notices your work and hires you as a Nikon brand Ambassador !

Wow! Loved it. How sharp are those images? Amazing. Eye detect on the fairy wrens - too cute. Looks like a fantastic option for bird & wildlife photography.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, those Fairy-wrens I lucked out when they were sitting on a branch in front of me! I think when travelling I'd use this Z50II + the Tamon 50-400mm (lighter set up) for birds & wildlife. Have a great week 🙏
I will be waiting to see your birds in flight,I photograph alot of Bald Eagles in the USA and have been waiting for a D500 replacement in the 20-33 mpx range
Hello Adrian looks like you got yourself winner. Just love the performance of that AF when shooting at the birds. Wow. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving ….📸🙏🏼
Awesome video! You have shown exactly what I needed to know about this camera. I suggested it for the exact same purpose with the same lens. The first two cuddling birds are so sweet. Great work :) Greetings from Germany 😊
Eagerly waited for this video. Thank you for letting us know the capabilities of this combo. Seems very capable for its price. I hope we can get to see some more videos about z50 ii.
All of your animal/bird photos/videos taken with this camera/lens are absolutely beautiful, thanks for showing what the camera is actually like to use! 😊
@@adrianalfordphotography you're welcome, I prefer your style of video over the techy/charts type of video, those ones leave me cold. Looking forward to future videos with the Z50 II.
Thank you for this video. It's a bit too late to be convinced to buy it, because I've already ordered Z50 II and it should arrive today, but nice to have confirmation it was a good choice. Currently I'm using Zfc and I love this camera, it reminds me my favourite cameras from my analog days and has sensor good enough, to make A3+ or bigger prints. Unfortunately I started with bird photography "more seriously" over year ago and for this kind of photography Zfc's AF is not good enough. I've been waiting for Z90/Z80, but when Z50 II came I decided to preorder it on Nikon site, because of its potential AF improvements. I don't care about more frames per second or sensor stabilization, my Tamron 150-500 has it, for rest of my photography I'm using quite light primes (landscape, people). So Z50 II will be for birds, Zfc for the rest :)
Hi Adrian, ahhh, these photos are fantastic. Well done, buddy 😉👍 I like especially how you got those birds that "format filling" into the frame. Long focal lengths are definitely a good idea for wildlife photography. And looks like a good combo as well. Thank you for the video and have a great week ahead, Christian
Thanks. Agree with others this best hands on review. Maybe a video comparing the z50ii photo quality vs the cropped quality of a z8/z9. Im looking at a 2nd body and considering the z50ii. I have a z8 now and primarily shoot nature and wildlife.
Just send for it as I don't have fortune to spend, and figured at this price point it was a good place to start with mirroreless. Still have the D850 which I figure will still be better for some things, but really want to try out the modern era AF systems, especially on tiny songbirds over here in sweden.
Great video, what fabulous images and footage, loved it. Looks like this camera will do what I want it to. Have ordered a Tamron 50-400 which I think should work nicely on this body. Definitely lighter in weight (and wallet) than the Nikon 180-600. If you could do some videos with the Z50ii and Tamron 50-400 that would be much appreciated.
Thank you Adrian for the video. I was thinking of moving from nikon dslr to mirrorless and wanted a good dx sensor option like D500 with Bird eye AF. This one seems the perfect option. However I also have old 200-500mm lens and if you can please hav a small video on this combo as was well as many wildlife n bird photographers might have that lens and would like to try it out. I could also give this combo to my 12 year old son who is coming up well using my old gear.😁
Thank you Adrian, very informative, I have that lens on a z7ii and have tried it out on my z50, maybe an upgrade to the z50ii could be coming soon after watching your review. All the best,
I use the 180-600 as my new primary wildlife and birding lens. Previously I avoided zooms for this sort of thing. I am glad to hear the Z50 is working well at this task. I am not surprised the image quality is good. I do set one of my function buttons on the Z9 to drop on DX crop mode. If a bird is a bit too small, going to DX makes it easier for the AF system. I do need a back up lightweight body as a backup. I will take a look at the Z50ii now. Thanks for the test. I miss the full on action camera features in a DX like the D500. I wonder if they will bring out a full replacement.
Nice video, Sometimes additional crop is useful as in this case, 4k 60 has additional 1.5x crop on Z50 ii the 180-600 is already given FOV of 270-900 but in 4k 60 it now gives 405-1350 FOV.
I have the z50 and the 180-600mm lens and I'm getting really itchy about upgrading to the z50ii. Part of me wants to wait longer and get the z6iii, but I really like that bird detect.
Hi. Good video. I have been wanting a backup camera for my spring trip with my Z8 & this might just be it. I thought Z6 III but after your review I am rethinking things and the crop factor could be easier than setting the Z8 into crop mode, which for birds, I do fairly often with the 180-600.
Great video Adrian. Really appreciate a real live review with Z50II. I own the Z50 with both kit lenses. My only issue with this camera is battery life (just awful) and battery indicator in the camera isn’t very accurate. So I am a bit disappointed to hear the battery life on the Z50II is worse (yikes). I noticed at the beginning of your video; did you have a battery power bank attached to the camera? If you did what brand is the power bank? Also are you going to use a none VR lens with the Z50II. I am curios not have IBIS in camera will be an issue (especially for video). Looking forward to your next video.
Battery life depends on how hard you push the Z50II. If you max it out like I did, it doesn't last that long. But if you did a snap here and there with a bit of video, then it should last longer. No power bank that is a HDMI cable. Yeah non VR lenses won't be the best handheld doing video, definitely need a tripod or monopod in that case. I'll stick to the VR lenses mainly.
Thank you for your wonderful video. I am impressed. Maybe I will also buy the camera. Looking forward for more videos of yours on the same topic. Just tell one thing in bird photography does the back button focus works perfectly if I don’t go for half press shutter release since in Z50 it does not work properly and shots go away. Looking forward to hear from you soon sir
The colors are striking ❤. To think that the Z50ii has cycle af , bird af and one more configurable button while the Z6iii has none of those is quite confusing as what is nikon intentions here. This little camera comes with lots of potentials .
I’m totally blown away, with my ZF as well I think either the Tamron 50-400(75-600) or Nikon 100-400 is more practical for me. The z50 II can be paired with a DX 16-50 for a far more compact system over the Z8 which I could afford, but like compactness. With regard to battery shooting video, if using a tripod, monopod the z50 II , does it still record when a powerbank is connected ? Will look into that monopod video & DX 18-140 no doubt in due time . Again fantastic shots!
Hi Adrian. I really like your videos and photos. Could YOU test both cameras: Z 50 and Z50II, and compare the noise they generate. Preferably on some static shots. I wonder if Z50 handles it better. In the last video of Z50 II and 180-600 the photos look less noisy and with nicer colors than in Z50. I read that Z50 II has better contrast and color saturation and I think it is. Could you also talk about it in the next video? Thank you and best regards.
Adrian, Thanks for these early impressions; sounds encouraging. When you have more time with it, could you comment further on the battery life? My bigger decision point i’m weighing is do i go with Canon for birding, or Nikon? I sold off my Nikon Z100-400 as i find i need a bit more reach. (I straddle both brands’ gear). So what next step up lens do i opt for?
I did mention the battery life in the video. It really depends how hard you go re use fps and what video you shoot. It's up to you re Canon or Nikon choice. I made mine.
How's the weather proofing? Z50ii looks like it czn do everything D500 can and that's amazing. I'm a hobbyist and I don't need pro bodies with tonns of features. So this one looks tempting.
Hi Adrian, 2 question if you care to elaborate: 1. Will it work with F mount 200-500 f5.6? 2. What is your memory card specification in your Z50ii setup?
@adrianalfordphotography thank you for answering. I am currently using D500 with 70-200 f2.8 or 200-500 f5.6 setup mostly for field sports (field hockey, rugby, football). Thinking of having Z50ii as a main body due to the significant update on focusing capability and use D500 as second body or back up.
Wow... such incredible footages...!! Your video tempt me to think again for my first camera...and I'm in big confusion... for a hobbyist please suggest one Nikon z50ii or Canon R8 which is an affordable full frame...?

Thanks for watching. Ya know the 500mm PF F5.6 has been on my radar for some time. I'm thinking it would be pretty amazing on the Z50II with FTZ/FTZII adaptors. Plus of course the added benefit of being able to use it on my D850 and D750 cameras. Maybe one day I'll score a good second hand one, although they are rare to find.
Yes and no. The Z50II is a DX camera, but has some good tech in it now thanks to the Expeed 7 processor. The Z6II is a full frame 24MP camera, still a very good camera. But if I was given a choice today, I'd go for the Z50II just for the upgrade focusing ability alone.
I was waiting for your videos on z50ii. Thanks for this one. Regarding the handling, my only concern is using it with heavier lenses as I hike a lot while shooting birds. I'm looking at the 400mm F4.5 lens which is much lighter. Wondering if you have any experience with that lens and do you think it would be easy to carry with z50ii. It's much lighter but not sure about it's balance.
400mm F4.5 is much more expensive but it is a brilliant lens. Possibly look at the Tamron 50-400mm (video at the end of this one) lighter set up and brilliant image quality for the price.
Yes, I've used the Tamron 150-500mm. It's ok. Be good for travelling with being more compact. I think though the Tamron 50-400mm is sharper and lighter. Plus you get a full frame equivalent of 600mm on the long end when paired with the Z50II.
Does it have any AF problems when using DSLR lenses with F mount adapter?. I saw Z50 mark 1 had some problems with af when using 200-500mm. I have a Sigma 100-400 F mount version. Can I use it without a problem?
Adrian, if we compare only the AF in Bird mode, how accurate is it compared to the Z8 or Z9? Does the Z8 or Z9 sets the AF tracking on the bird better? I know that based on other features the cameras are not comparable, but just on this point how good is the Z50II?
I have the combo of Z8 + 600pf. I am looking for second body preferably a crop one as I dont like extenders. I am not comparing Z8 with Z50II but do you think the AF ? I mainly do bird photography (stills) not much video. Thanks
Did you even watch the video? I showed what the AF is like and I even commented what it's like. Yet, people are still asking me "what's the bird AF like?"
You’re making me impatient as far as waiting for the short eared owls winter migration. Gonna run this exact setup with either my Zf or Z9. They aren’t active till late in the day so dynamic range is biggie.
Great video. But it really begs the question WHERE IS BIRD AF for the Z6III? Is this camera why that option has not been added by Nikon to the Z6III?!! COME ON NIKON!
Man I wanted a6400/6700 with 200-600, but the grip on Sony APS-C is small even on A7iii. This Z50ii has nice grip, waiting for Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 to be paired with Z 18-140 & this lovely 180-600
Yes, but what reviewers say is that Z6III's Animal AF is good enough for birds. It would be interesting to compare the real effectiveness of Z50II and Z6II bird AF even though Z6III doesn't have a special bird AF mode. It may be a very interesting video @@adrianalfordphotography
@@adrianalfordphotography Actually they're about the same weight if you don't include the tripod collar. And you get f/4.5 with the prime. F/6.3 on DX can be a bit dark I think. But of course, the zoom... zooms! And it focuses closer.
Im getting amazing bird shots with the 50-250 that came with the camera, now I will put the Tamron you suggested on my wish list. I love this Nikon and it’s my first Nikon and now I guess it’s time to put my other cameras except my 1inch point and shoot and my GoPro on marketplace.I still have 2 pristine cameras from 2 popular brands and the reason they ar still like new is because I really didn’t like the shooting experience they gave me. I always passed up Nikon and got what brand was trending at the time and I’m so happy that I have this Z50ii. Now it’s time to shoot.
Very good video! You tested exactly what I needed to know. I have the Z50 with this 180-600 mm lens and will probably upgrade because of the better autofocus, the pre-capture and the additional U3 switch.
Excellent video Adrian, I was just wondering would it be more prudent to shoot at 4K50P for us PAL users? I noticed according to the information on screen that you were shooting at 4K60P and slowing down at 25fps. There would be some temporal distortion with the slowdown. Anyway great photos & video from this little camera! 👍
,I had a suspicion that it would work well with the 180-600.IBIS, Now picture a proper pro level APS-C body... 30 FPS RAW, around 24-30mp, stacked sensor, IBIS, RAW pre-capture, CFexpress slot, proper weather sealing, 4K60 without the 1.5x crop. If they sold that at ~2000 bucks it would fly off the shelves faster than they could hope to build it.
I forgot to mention when using the Nikon Z 180-600mm on the Nikon Z50II you get a full frame equivalent focal length of 270-900mm. It certainly helps get you closer to the action for birds and wildlife.

Hi Adrian, 2 question if you care to elaborate:
1. Will it work with F mount 200-500 f5.6?
2. What is your memory card specification in your Z50ii setup?
1. Yes, but via the FTZ/FTZII adaptors.
2. Sandisk Extreme Pro SDXC
Thank you for your question / comment. Due to the overwhelming demand of people asking me questions and for technical support (sometimes over 200 a day), wanting free help and advice on my RUclips channel, I can no longer do this. Hi great video. Was waiting for a review on this combo. Please can u suggest how this body will perform with Tamron 150-500 mm lense?
I'm sure it will perform just as good with the Tamron 150-500mm - thanks for watching
Great video, what would i be like with the FTZ adapter and the 500mm PF f/5.6? I',m a D850 user and was looking to upgrade.
Hi Adrian, How does the camera feel in the hand? The grip and reaching the fn1 and fn2 buttons comfortably? I haven’t watch the video yet..
It's feel good in my hand, but I can't comment how it would go in yours. Best go to a camera shop first and try it out before buying.
Great video! How well does the VR work, since it is from the lens only?
Surprisingly good.
Thank you for this informative video. Do you consider the z50ii an upgrade from the z6ii? It is a much cheaper option than the z6iii.
Yes and no. The Z50II is a DX camera, but has some good tech in it now thanks to the Expeed 7 processor. The Z6II is a full frame 24MP camera, still a very good camera. But if I was given a choice today, I'd go for the Z50II just for the upgrade focusing ability alone.
@adrianalfordphotography thank you!
@adrianalfordphotography Thanks for your insights🙏🏼.. Yes that would be a great budget option... Would check out your video on that.
I wouldn't argue about optical quaity, but when it comes to budget, I prefer the Tamron 150-500.
I will be doing a video testing the FTZII adaptor with F mount lens with the Z50II, hang in there.
@adrianalfordphotography Thanks 😊
Adrian, if we compare only the AF in Bird mode, how accurate is it compared to the Z8 or Z9? Does the Z8 or Z9 sets the AF tracking on the bird better? I know that based on other features the cameras are not comparable, but just on this point how good is the Z50II?
Can you use back button AF with this camera? I noticed there is no AF-ON.
Yes
Hello! Very good video and info.
I have a d500 + nikkor 200-500. Is the z50 ii + nikkor 180-600 better for birds? Thank you very much!
Both set ups are very good. There are just too many differences for me to list here though, Thanks for watching
And what do you think about Z7ii for wildlife photography. Especially with 500mm F4 VR lens?
I don't
You’re making me impatient as far as waiting for the short eared owls winter migration. Gonna run this exact setup with either my Zf or Z9. They aren’t active till late in the day so dynamic range is biggie.
Awesome
@ Clarification, gonna run the Z50II with the 180-600 alongside either the Z9 or Zf.
Thanks for the video, but would it be worth it to trade-in Z5 for the Z50-II?
If you wanted better focus performance the Z50II is better.
Great video. But it really begs the question WHERE IS BIRD AF for the Z6III? Is this camera why that option has not been added by Nikon to the Z6III?!! COME ON NIKON!
Yep.
I’m sold
Thanks for watching 🙏
Man I wanted a6400/6700 with 200-600, but the grip on Sony APS-C is small even on A7iii. This Z50ii has nice grip, waiting for Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 to be paired with Z 18-140 & this lovely 180-600
Thanks for watching 🙏
Can you try 120 fps FHD
Make a video about bird in flight and bird in flight video also
I will when I get time. Thanks
I'm wondering what AF is like for flying birds?
Video coming soon on that - stay tuned 👍
The question is: is Z50II bird AF better than the Z6III's? I think the latter is the direct competition of the Z50II rather than Z8 and Z9
Z50II has dedicated bird AF, Z6III does not.
I have d7200, would this be a good upgrade ?
Yes
Děkuji.
🙂🙏
I already have the lens, but that body is missing. I don't have the money for it, but I'll probably buy it before the migrating birds arrive.
Gracias
Maybe 400/4.5 would be better? It is more expensive though.
I agree re the 400mm F4.5. The Tamron 50-40mm may be a cheaper, lighter alternative.
Thanks for watching 🙏
How is the battery life
I mentioned that in the video
Maybe the D500 replacement?
No, I don't think it's the D500 replacement. Close though.
Very good video! You tested exactly what I needed to know. I have the Z50 with this 180-600 mm lens and will probably upgrade because of the better autofocus, the pre-capture and the additional U3 switch.
Thanks for watching 🙏
👍👍👍👍👍
Is the bird AF in this camera better than Z6 iii's Animal AF at tracking birds ?
Z50II has dedicated bird AF whereas the Z6III does not. But maybe that'll come in a firmware upgrade eventually?
Tamron has 50-400 for Nikon nice news
Yes, it's a good lens
Excellent video Adrian, I was just wondering would it be more prudent to shoot at 4K50P for us PAL users? I noticed according to the information on screen that you were shooting at 4K60P and slowing down at 25fps. There would be some temporal distortion with the slowdown. Anyway great photos & video from this little camera! 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
D500 with 200-500 does the same job in much lower budget.
No. It does not.
,I had a suspicion that it would work well with the 180-600.IBIS,
Now picture a proper pro level APS-C body...
Z50? lol Why? I owned one. Static shots are fine. In flight, forget it. The tracking is no where near sufficient.
Maybe before commenting next time you actually look the video or even the thumbnail. This is NOT the Z50, it's the new model Z50II.
@@adrianalfordphotography Just ignore the trolls, Adrian they seem to sprout whenever Nikon releases a new body.
